What Is a Cistern Used For?

Cisterns are large tanks, typically made of plastic, that store collected rainwater for use or consumption. The cistern is stored underground and can usually hold anywhere from 100 gallons to several thousand gallons depending on the type of tank you obtain.

The most common cistern water use is domestic, including flushing toilets, cleaning the laundry, watering the garden, and doing other household chores. However, some people use cistern water as drinking water; however, you will have to take additional steps to ensure the water is safe to drink.

Benefits of a Cistern

In addition to being a source of water for drinking and domestic use, many people install a cistern because of its other benefits, such as:

  • Managing stormwater. If you experience a lot of runoffs during storms, the cistern helps to reduce the volume of water that enters the sewer system, which saves you money on municipal treatment costs.
  • Reducing pollution. Cisterns can help prevent contaminants from entering streams or other water sources that receive rainwater, which means water sources are cleaner because of minimal erosion effects.
  • Saving you money. In using your cistern for some of your household water needs, you save money on your monthly bills by not using the city’s water.
